Introduction
Creative
Futures 2012, wow had it really been a year since the last one? The aims of Creative Futures are to improve
understanding and knowledge of possible future career opportunities within
various creative industries, to provide an insight into the realities of the
labour market for the sector you may want to develop a career within, to
provide various opportunities to develop further professionally and lastly to
increase confidence, helping you to create and manage your own career path.
When I
reflected on how fast my time at uni was going, I decided that my aim for this
Creative Futures was to explore in depth the possibilities for life after my
degree. To be able to evaluate the
avenues open to me and to gain the knowledge and insight for the path I
eventually chose. During the week I
wanted the opportunity to learn from others the difficulties they had faced,
and the solutions to problems they had found, accepting the path I take will
never be exactly the same as others but to be open to the help and advice so
that I am equipped the best I can be for the future.
When we got given the programme schedule for the week, I was
pleased to see a number of the sessions had been what I hoped, working at the
BBC (Getting a Job by Wendy
Rees, BBC Wales), and practical advice (Piece
to Camera by Matthew Richards - BBC), a potential starting point in the film industry (Ffresh by Berwyn Rolands), working as
a photographer (Getting started in
Photography by Mark Devereux &Paul Herrmann and Life in the Afterworld…as
a freelance Artist (Photography) by Alison McLean). These ones I felt would enable me to check
out the main avenues open to me after my degree – photography, film maker or
commercial television.
Whilst some of the other sessions covered more of the
practical day to day knowledge I would require (Copyright - What you need to know by Janet Jones, Film, Funding and Wales by Adam
Partridge, The MEDIA Programme:
Funding, Networking and Training Opportunities by Judy Wasdell and Going in to Business as a Young Entrepreneur
by Charli Dickenson) that would be beneficial to me whichever avenue I
decided to pursue.
Although
I am writing up about Creative Futures 2012, I am going to focus on the
sessions I chose to attend and the ones that stood out to me for the
information I was given and the knowledge I gained.
